Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Indian Trail public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
Plainview Road municipal maintenance acceptance
Twelve households on a private gravel road platted in 1968 are asking the town to take over their deteriorating road, which has deep potholes, drainage problems, and unsafe conditions for emergency vehicles, school buses, and elderly residents. Council outlined a 50-50 special assessment path requiring 60% resident signatures and rough costs of $600–$1,000 per year per household over ten years, and set up a follow-up meeting with a neighborhood spokesperson.
Traffic Signals and CRTPO Regional Transportation
All Aboard Charlotte asked the council to consider a commuter rail proposal on the underused CSX line from Charlotte through Matthews to Monroe — roughly $900 million to Matthews plus $300 million to Monroe, with about 28,000 daily riders projected. They want it on a future agenda and want the town to raise it with CRTPO and regional partners.
CRTPO federal funding for local transportation projects
Alsobrooks reported CRTPO won $3 million+ for a regional safety program, the Chestnut Lane Connector should finish this year, and CRTPO reinstated support for the I-77 South toll lanes P3 on September 23 after Charlotte briefly rescinded its backing.
Stinson/Younts/Fairview intersection improvements
Council formally started the ~$10.4 million intersection realignment project, splitting costs 50/50 with the regional transportation partnership and paying the town's $5.2 million share out of capital reserves over six to seven years.
Indian Trail Road Complete Street Phase 2
Design stalled while Phase 1 utility work wrapped up; council approved $216,610 to resume design and directed the $200,000 state grant there. Some members want to revisit the 10-foot sidewalks and median islands to cut right-of-way costs.
Old Monroe/Hayes Road intersection safety
A 22-year resident and another speaker called out the dangerous South Fork and Gribble Roads intersection, citing frequent wrecks. Police data shows crashes dropped from 45 (2022-2024) to nine last year after the speed limit was cut to 25 mph, and a full stoplight is coming with the Indian Trail Road Complete Street project.
Indian Trail Complete Street Phase 1
The project is stuck waiting on NCDOT review comments and a CSX construction agreement before it can get construction authorization — a two-month state board process once paperwork clears. Council kicked in $46,470 more for design fixes.
Hayes Road / Old Charlotte Highway crash history
A notoriously dangerous intersection with a history of crashes — including a cement truck flipping into a home's fence. Two fix options cost $5M–$6.5M; survey residents prefer the realignment. Council decides at a future meeting, with federal funding uncertain.
Road resurfacing and pavement condition
The $1.19M repaving contract covers mostly Brook Valley and Brookhaven streets. Barber noted years four and five of the repaving program aren't fully funded and the Younts Road intersection commitment needs a funding stream.
Old Monroe Road $1 million payment to NCDOT
Staff pushed NCDOT to cover the ten-foot multimodal path under its own multimodal policy, cutting the town's share from about $1.3 million to roughly $817,000. Final agreement comes back for a vote.
I-77 South express lanes rescission and repayment exposure
Alsobrooks' vote against rescinding support for the I-77 South project may have saved Indian Trail from owing millions — Charlotte could owe $40 million and Monroe $2.3 million if proposed legislation passes requiring towns that voted against it to repay a share of $64 million in NCDOT planning costs.
Helmsville Road West Special Assessment
A homeowner on a private drive near Hwy. 74 wants the town to widen the tight, dangerous entrance — but because it's a private drive, she'd pay half of the $39,427 cost (about $2,000 a year for ten years) through a special assessment. Staff are waiting on her agreement before bringing anything back for a vote.
Gribble/South Fork/Indian Trail Rd Intersection
A delivery driver who works the area daily begged Council for a four-way stop at this congested, hazardous intersection. The town says its hands are largely tied — NCDOT controls it — but Chestnut Parkway's opening should siphon off traffic.
Rushing subdivision cut-through closure
Rushing Park residents fed up with cut-through traffic got a 3-1 vote for a six-month temporary closure with water barricades costing about $11,000. Staff will report back on how it works before any permanent decision.
