Civic issues
Topics getting the most attention in Indian Trail public meetings, ranked by how frequently they come up.
State legislative agenda development
Council started building its first true legislative agenda for the 2027 long session, focused on sewer capacity for economic development, better state road funding (the town has paid $5–6 million local shares on recent road projects), the public works facility, fiber/utility protections, and preserving local governing authority from state preemption.
Traffic Signals and CRTPO Regional Transportation
All Aboard Charlotte asked the council to consider a commuter rail proposal on the underused CSX line from Charlotte through Matthews to Monroe — roughly $900 million to Matthews plus $300 million to Monroe, with about 28,000 daily riders projected. They want it on a future agenda and want the town to raise it with CRTPO and regional partners.
CRTPO federal funding for local transportation projects
Alsobrooks reported CRTPO won $3 million+ for a regional safety program, the Chestnut Lane Connector should finish this year, and CRTPO reinstated support for the I-77 South toll lanes P3 on September 23 after Charlotte briefly rescinded its backing.
Moore Park waterline connection
A waterline deal with Ty-Par Development was never signed by Union County, so it was ratified informally. Council agreed to have staff redraw the agreement with the town's share capped at $500,000.
Stinson/Younts/Fairview intersection improvements
Council formally started the ~$10.4 million intersection realignment project, splitting costs 50/50 with the regional transportation partnership and paying the town's $5.2 million share out of capital reserves over six to seven years.
Right-of-way encroachment fee increases
Utility companies will now pay much more to dig up town rights-of-way: $1,000 for major encroachments plus 19 cents per linear foot, instead of a flat $100. A mile of installation jumps from $1,000 to about $5,500, offsetting staff time rather than falling on taxpayers.
